Course Content

Everything at level 1:

Instrumentation:

  • Instrumentation of short keyboard works;
  • Elementary theoretical and practical knowledge of classical instruments;
  • The different instrument families and their main characteristics;
  • The typical properties and performance techniques of each individual instrument;
  • Study of the construction of classical chamber music ensembles.

Score Reduction:

  • Reduction for keyboard (solo, four hands, two pianos) of simple to more complex orchestral passages;
  • Acquiring sufficient knowledge of piano technique and pianistic writing style.

Research:

  • Carrying out an individual research project under the guidance of the teacher;
  • Instrumentation or reduction based on personal interests (of one's own composition, for other specific formations or instruments, in the style of a particular composer, etc.);
  • Including a written research paper based on a clearly defined research question.

General:

  • From Classicism to the 20th century;
  • Understanding of different stylistic periods and/or movements and their typical characteristics;
  • Completion of scores and parts (efficient, clear layout);
  • Preparation and coordination of at least one rehearsal/workshop with live musicians/ensemble (e.g., string quartet, woodwind quintet, brass quintet or quartet, pianists), including efficient and clear scores and parts, clear verbal instructions, and well-defined ideas.

Instrumentation:

  • Learning to orchestrate – putting instrumental knowledge into practice.
  • Being able to make well-considered choices regarding instrumentation based on the requirements of a specific work.
  • Developing/applying analytical insight, a musical culture, stylistic awareness, imagination, etc.

Score Reduction:

  • Developing/applying analytically and stylistically informed score insight, as well as both musical and practical logic.

Research:

  • Developing indepence in relation to instrumentation and score reduction through a research-based attitude.
