Course Content

- The free fugue: thorough study and research of all components in a freer compositional concept.
- Study and analysis of various prototypes and form concepts.
- Research into musico-historical and stylistic context and evolution during the various style periods.
- Precursors, various types and important protagonists, the significance of the fugue in the 20th century.
- Substantive knowledge of key historical and current handbooks, treatises, reference works etc. about fugue.

Realisation of free fugues to existing model or according to own model, based on fugue themes of varying difficulty.
Optional: relisation of a free fugue based on own theme.

Course Objectives

Perfecting professional skills, resulting in artistic works that focus on personal vision as well as creative input.
Achieving an artistic personality that reflects musical maturity in both the development of a stylistically responsible vision and the adoption of a solid artistic stance when interpreting a composition.



LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The student progressively masters the knowledge and skills necessary for their chosen musical specialisation through methodical frameworks appropriate to the level of study, artistic and academic sources, and provided exercises and musical examples from the relevant repertoire. (LO 1–5)

The student demonstrates, in an individual context and on a progressive basis, the ability to apply artistic and practice-oriented frameworks and craft-based knowledge, based on relevant artistic sources and/or practical examples within the context of a sustainable artistic presentation/performance. (LO 6-7, LO 9-10)

With guidance, the student constructs a fully-fledged artistic product based on an authentic and well-founded artistic vision, and communicates about it effectively. He/she reflects on their own work with a critical and artistic attitude, with an eye towards lifelong professional development, in relation to the music world and the broader socio-cultural context.
